The first thing one notices about Z, or as he was once called, Zephyr, is the giant metal monster of a contraption that is his arm. With even a slight examination, this story is one that, absolutely, belongs to the titular character, and the Marines he once called his allies. Smartly, this One Piece movie is about Monkey D. The movie is aware of the limitation it was given, but rather than throw up its hands in the air, it makes the most of what it has. From the opening credits to the inexplicably weird choice of ending music, it appears that Film Z is exactly, painfully, that, but its strength, and, by extension, the strength of One Piece’s setup, is how much one can get from so little. Along the way, Hero learns nothing, gains nothing, and everything continues just as it was before the movie started. Hero goes to new place! Fights new villain! Circumstances seem tough, but at the end of the day, none of it is big enough to matter outside the context of that hour-and-a-half, or enough to undermine Hero’s accomplishments in the actual series. Underneath the guise of being just another anime movie, contained within is a shockingly human and ultimately tragic story about justice, obsession, and dreams, that provides a depth to its fictional universe in a way that the manga itself barely allows.įans of any popular, ongoing manga are fairly familiar with the formula belonging to non-canon anime movies. To say so much, however, is merely hitting the surface of the complete tale that Film Z truly is. Like Strong World, it was overseen by the original author, though this one explores a further scale than its predecessor, guest starring a number of the canon’s supporting cast, and attempting to explain a larger part of the whole that is the One Piece universe.
